U3A Alexandra Session 3 - Some Thoughts on Music
Speaker: Roger Browne
Roger was a late starter on the cello, being in his 30’s when he joined evening classes in Christchurch. Since then he has played in community orchestras in Christchurch,
Palmerston North, and Central Otago. He has played with the Opera Wanganui Orchestra and was a founding member of the Manawatu Baroque Soloists. He has performed in the pit
orchestra for many stage shows. Roger’s background is in physics and electronic engineering, with a BSc(Hons), ME, and PhD.
Although music has been part of human existence since the dawn of civilization, the modern cello has a lineage of no more than 500 years. How does this instrument make sounds that
our ears interpret as music? It is all about vibrations, with the cello strings vibrating, passing this on to the body of the cello, thence to the air, and finally to the delicate mechanism in our
ears. The talk will provide a brief overview of how this happens, with examples played (live) on a modern cello.
