Spring 2008

With the arrival of Spring REAP is busy planning new workshops and activities to take us through to Christmas.

Of particular note is the annual "Thyme Festival" which will take place from 15- 23 November.  The theme this year is "Cherishing our Environment".  Activities over the week will include:

  • Sculptors working throughout the week with finished product being auctioned at Saturday night gala event.
  • Workshops in various arts, gardening methods, sustainability issues and food.
  • Daily concerts in the park.
  • Afterschool workshops for children.
  • Museum planned tours
  • Historic and interest walks through thyme covered and historic areas.

Check out our courses pages for the latest update on current  programmes.  And remember it is a great help to have as many of you as possible fill out the Adult and Community Education Survey - you can find the link for this under 'Adult Courses'. Thank you.

S.T.A.R Gifted Programme (Students, Thinking, Achieving, Reaching)

How do you recognise a gifted child?

  • an early interest or sensitivity to surroundings
  • curious and observant
  • exceptional memory
  • talks and reads early and fluently
  • excellent concentration if he/she chooses
  • asks shrewd/unusual questions
  • grasps ideas quickly
  • a 'quirky' sense of humour

How do you cater for a gifted child?

Gifted children need support and encouragement as much, or more than, other children. They must be motivated to develop and perform to their optimum levels. They need choice, and ownership.

From 2001 till 2005 Central Otago REAP established gifted programmes of one day per week for gifted primary children in Alexandra (a Year 5-6 class and a year 7-8 class) and Wanaka (a year 5-6 class) with funding provided essentially by the Central Lakes Trust. From 2006 till 2008 the Ministry of Education provided the funding for three years. This funding finishes at the end of 2008. Parents and schools already provide approximately 40% of the funding for the programme. As a community it is essential we develop the future leaders of our communities. Can you provide sponsorship? Offer a donation? Sponsor a student scholarship?

What can a sponsor offer?

  • Product endorsement from any or all sections of the One Day School Community
  • The use of your logo or trademark in material used by the One Day Schools
  • Opportunity for you to supply equipment, technology or services
  • Opportunity for you to watch the growth and development of our future leaders
  • Naming rights to one or both of our One Day Schools
