CENTRAL OTAGO REAP in the WEST OTAGO REGION

Geography

West Otago is situated in a fertile farming valley surrounded by the Blue Mountain and Whitcomb ranges.  In recent years there has been a large increase in dairy farms in this traditional sheep farming area.  The other main industry is forestry.  The total population is approximately 2000 with 843 in the main centre of Tapanui.  One secondary college and three primary schools service the area.
