CENTRAL OTAGO REAP in STRATH TAIERI DISTRICT (MIDDLEMARCH)
Geography
The Strath Taieri area is the area bounded by the Eastern Otago uplands and Deep Stream to the South, to the hills north of Hyde, by the Rock and Pillar Range to the west and Taieri Ridge to the east. The main centre, Middlemarch, is approximately 45.45d latitude, 170.10d longitude.
The predominant industry in the area has always been farming - mainly sheep, although there has been a move in recent years to deer farming and dairy grazing also.
The Strath Taieri and Hyde area is serviced by the Strath Taieri School which caters up to Year 8 and from there children go off to high school, either by bus to Taieri High in Mosgiel or boarding schools mainly in Dunedin or Oamaru.
The population of the Strath Taieri area is approximately 250.
